What are you taking to heart this week? As a parent, I find myself at times stopping in the middle of a conversation with my child and then saying something like this: “Are you listening to me?” Sometimes when I say this they are actually looking at me and are in fact audibly hearing and knowing in some sense. But hearing and truly listening are two different things. I could say it another way: “Are you taking this to heart?”

All of us would acknowledge that there is only one God and that His name is the LORD. Moses makes this point: “Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other” (Deut. 4:39). But notice he doesn’t just say “know” this truth, but also “take it to your heart.” What would it mean to know that there is One God and that He is the LORD and to actually let that inform the way we live daily? To take it to our hearts? For starters, it would mean that ultimately there really is only One with whom we have to do. In addition, it would mean that anything that rivals this One LORD is idolatry. That there is only One God and we know who He is through His Son Jesus is a profound truth; A truth that we were made to take to our hearts this week.
